Las Paylas Natural Water Slide

Las Paylas is a hidden natural water slide, Puerto Rico’s secret, tucked away on the outskirts of the El Yunque National Forest.  The water runs through the rocks making natural pathways (SLIDES) for eager swimmers to follow.  The El Yunque national forest water slide is fun for everyone and a great opportunity for some fun Instagram reels!

Las Paylas is located about an hour from San Juan (use Las Pailas spelling for Google Maps). It is a great day trip after you have done some touring in San Juan Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Islands

There are many islands that you can visit in a day trip from San Juan or other areas of Puerto Rico.  They are picturesque and full of many Instagram opportunities for unique and beautiful photos.

Culebra

beach and water with palm trees at Flamenco Beach in Culebra Puerto Rico

Culebra is reachable by ferry or airplane and is a quaint little beachy island to the east of the main island of Puerto Rico.  One day in Culebra will be filled with scenic views from pretty little beaches and a charming town filled with local restaurants and shops.

For information about HOW TO GET TO CULEBRA, read through my Guide to One Day in Culebra. It contains tips about transportation and things to do while on Culebra.

Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach is often considered one of the best beaches in the world for its mile-long white sandy beach lined with palm trees.  The view of the mountains in the distance is equally attractive!

In addition to the beach-themed photos, there are a couple of other amazing Instagram “props” located on the shores of Flamenco Beach.

There are 2 official military tanks that were left when the US had a presence in Puerto Rico. The tanks are now covered in graffiti and rust, but are still a great spot to capture a unique selfie for Instagram on the shore of a beautiful beach in Puerto Rico!

Zoni Beach

Zoni Beach is the second-most popular beach on the small island of Culebra.  However, the long sandy shores seem to be a secluded paradise, and a palm tree-lined Instagram photo with the crystal blue water in the background is easily done without the added bystanders in the way!

Picturesque Old San Juan

Colorful buildings in Old San Juan

The Old San Juan Instagram spots are sooo numerous and sooo colorful!

Fortaleza Street is the main street in Old San Juan.  It is the most visited street in the capital and probably the most photogenic, colorful, and full of life!  Imagine the old red cobblestone streets framed by vibrant old buildings on each side in bright blue, purple, and orange, with vivid flowers on the balconies in yellow and red.

It is a photographer’s dream and a delight to Instagrammers!! Spend at least one day in San Juan enjoying the colonial architecture and snapping some great Instagram photos.

The colorful buildings and cobblestone streets all over San Juan are just as numerous as the stray cats! This kitty posed for his portrait and must like taking Instagram shots just as much as I do!!

Umbrella Street in Old San Juan

colorful umbrellas across a street in Puerto Rico inviting great instagram selfies

They are located on Calle Fortaleza or Calle de la Resistanica.

The umbrellas are occasionally taken down, changed to different colors, or changed to different displays. The street is blocked off to vehicle traffic …. and even commonly blocked off from pedestrians to prevent protests.  Even so, you can still take photos from the end of the street.

When the umbrellas are up, they hang above Fortaleza Street, filling the sky, inviting selfie-lovers to capture colorful images, and making this one of the best photo spots in Old San Juan!

PRO TIP: The umbrellas are often rotated with other art displays.

I Love Puerto Rico Sign

I Heart PR, one of the most Instagrammable places in San Juan Puerto Rico

The Instagram-worthy I Heart PR is located on the waterfront close to where the cruise ships dock in port. Make sure you include this stop and take some selfies and Instagram shots on your walk around Old San Juan.

We discovered this wall mural while on a San Juan Walking Food Tour.  It is located on the side of an old building on an old colonial door on San Jose Street in Old San Juan.  This remarkable piece of street art has become a popular backdrop for Instagram posts, adding a touch of vibrant culture to the historic surroundings.

The mural’s history adds another layer to its significance; initially adorned with the lively hues of the Puerto Rican flag, it underwent a transformation in 2016. It was changed to a striking black-and-white mural in 2016 as a powerful form of protest and a symbol of resistance.  Exploring the mural is not just a feast for the eyes –and an excellent Instagram post– but also an opportunity to connect with the rich tapestry of narratives woven into the vibrant streets of Old San Juan.

Show your love for this cute town by capturing the essence of its charm at the popular Instagram site in Plaza Colon. This picturesque location is a testament to the town’s unique character, and posing for a photo here is a delightful way to showcase your affection for San Juan.

To make the most of your experience, consider arriving early in the day to beat the crowds and avoid any potential wait times. I personally arrived at 9 am, and to my delight, I found myself as the sole early bird strolling around the tranquil plaza. The peaceful ambiance allowed me to fully immerse myself in the surroundings and capture the perfect shot without any distractions. It was a truly serene and memorable moment, creating a lasting connection between myself and the captivating spirit of San Juan.

Forts in San Juan

In addition to all the colorful colonial architecture in its streets, San Juan has a lot of history in its forts.  The Spanish were in control of Puerto Rico for hundreds of years so they constructed some fortifications that have now become National Park Tourist Sites.

El Morro

El Morro is located in the northwest of San Juan and is the most beautiful fort in Puerto Rico!  It has a park-like entrance with a large grassy gathering space that entices picnics and kites.  The large fort looms high in the background, overlooking the San Juan harbor, which it once defended.

You can easily get Instagram photos of the fort as you walk along the ramparts and stand on the walls looking out into the harbor, right where the canons were once located. It is one of the most Instagrammable places in Puerto Rico because of the backdrop of the harbor contrasting with the large dark fort.

Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery

It will be your lucky day if the cemetery gates are open.  It is one of the most beautiful cemeteries that I have seen.  The huge memorial displays rise from the ground in front of the oceanfront as they pay tribute to the dead that are buried there. These gravesites have one of the best ocean views on the island of Puerto Rico!!!

San Cristobal

Another interesting photo spot in Puerto Rico is another fort in Old San Juan.  San Cristobal seems to be right in the heart of Old San Juan.  The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and spans a large 27 acres of the island of Puerto Rico!

Gozalandia Waterfall (Cascada Gozalandia) – San Sebastian

Gozalandia Waterfall in Puerto Rico is a great Instagram location!

Located in San Sebastian and a scenic drive that is 2 hours west of San Juan, are the Gozalandia Waterfalls. There is a small parking charge to view the upper and lower Gozalandia Waterfalls, but it is worth it! You will be able to get some great photos of the beautiful scenery and cascading waterfalls. The lower falls are just a few minutes away from the parking lots, while the upper falls are about a 5 minutes walk along a path.

When we went there were just a few locals at the upper falls, but as soon as we started walking back, a tour group was making their way down the path. Go to these waterfalls early for the best photo opportunities!
