Bolivia is a landlocked country in western South America made of 9 departments with a population estimated at 11 million. The current capital of Bolivia is Sucre. Before Spanish colonization, the Andean regain was a part of the Incan empire. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century they built their empire in large part upon the silver that was extracted from the Bolivian mines. Over the course of the 19th and 20th there was a call for independence, a loss of land to Chile and finally an election of a democratic president in 1997.
